Back Pain Treatment in Flushing, Queens
Plain-language information about one of the most common reasons people call a chiropractor. This is not a diagnosis, a treatment plan, or a promise about how you will feel.

Back pain can sit between the shoulder blades, along the middle of the back, or low near the belt line. It may feel like a dull ache, a sharp catch when you bend, or stiffness that is worst in the morning. For many people in Flushing it starts with something ordinary: lifting a box, a long commute, a long shift on your feet, or a fender-bender on the way to work.
Read this first. This page is general education from the Flushing office of Dr. Richard Pashayan, DC, DABCO. It is not medical advice for you. It does not say what is wrong with your back, how many visits you need, or that you will get better. An exam comes before any care.
Common causes of back pain
These are common patterns, not a diagnosis. More than one can be involved at the same time:
- Muscle strain. Overstretching or overworking the muscles of the back, often from lifting, twisting, or a sudden movement.
- Disc problems. The discs between the vertebrae can bulge or wear with age and stress. Some disc problems irritate a nerve and send pain into the buttock or leg. That pattern is covered on the lower back pain and sciatica page.
- Posture and joint stiffness. Long hours sitting, slouching at a screen, or standing in one position can load the joints of the spine and leave them stiff and sore.
- Car accidents. Even a low-speed crash can strain the back and neck, and symptoms sometimes show up a day or two later. See auto accident care and No-Fault.
- Work injuries. Lifting, carrying, repetitive motion, or a fall on the job. The office accepts Workers’ Comp; bring your claim information when you call.
Back pain often travels with other problems. If your upper back and neck are both involved, also read about neck pain care in Flushing.
When to see a medical doctor or go to the ER
Most back pain is not an emergency. Some symptoms are. Call 911 or go to an emergency room, or see a medical doctor promptly, if back pain comes with any of these:
- New trouble controlling the bladder or bowels, or numbness in the groin or inner thighs
- Weakness in a leg or foot that is getting worse
- Fever, chills, or feeling sick along with the back pain
- Unexplained weight loss, or a history of cancer
- Pain after a serious fall or crash, especially with possible broken bones
- Severe pain that does not change at all with position or rest, or pain in the chest or abdomen
Chiropractic care is not the first stop for those problems. If Dr. Pashayan finds signs during your exam that need another doctor, he will tell you.
How care starts: a careful exam
Dr. Pashayan has examined and treated back pain at this Flushing office since 1982. He is board certified as a chiropractic orthopedist (DABCO). The first visit starts with your history: when the pain began, what makes it better or worse, and what you need to get back to doing.
Then he examines how you move. That usually includes range of motion, posture, manual palpation of the spine and muscles, and orthopedic and neurological tests such as strength, reflexes, and sensation. The goal is to find the main cause of the problem, not just the spot that hurts. He will tell you what he finds.
If you already have X-ray or MRI reports, bring them. If he thinks you need imaging or a visit with a medical doctor, he will say so.
Hands-on chiropractic care for back pain
If chiropractic care fits what the exam shows, it is hands-on. It may include:
- Chiropractic adjustment (spinal manipulation). Controlled pressure from his hands to a joint that is not moving well, to ease pain and help the back move.
- Hands-on work for tight, tender muscles around the spine.
- Simple home advice on sitting, lifting, sleeping, and light movement. See back pain exercises and posture tips. Those are general ideas, not your exercise plan.
There is no set number of visits decided before the exam. He will explain what he expects and check how you are doing as you go. Feeling better is a goal, not a guarantee. More about chiropractic manipulation.
Insurance and payment
The office accepts most major insurance, No-Fault for car accidents, Workers’ Comp, and cash. Coverage depends on your own plan, so mention your insurance when you call. The plan names are on the appointment page.
